Munich/Tunis – Following project developments in Morocco Paul van Son, Industry Initiative Dii CEO together with a Dii delegation, last week met with four members of the interim Tunisian government and agreed on further steps to implement the Desertec Vision in Tunisa.

Ministers Abdelaziz Rassaa (Industry & Energy), Rifaat Chaabouni (Education & Research), Abderrazak Zouari (Regional Development & Business) und Abdelhamid Triki (Planning & International Relations) stressed the importance and significance of a joint effort, together with Dii, which is necessary to carry out the mutual projects enabling the generation of a renewable energy electricity supply. The focus of the talks concerned developing opportunities for the next generation through job creation and establishing knowledge transfer.

Feasibility study together with STEG Energies Renouvables

STEG Energies Renouvables, together with the Dii, have initiated a feasibility study of substantial solar and wind energy projects in Tunisia.

Technical and regulatory prerequisites, necessary for both local energy consumption and the export of electricity to neighbouring countries, will be reviewed. The study will also review the financing of a possible reference project in Tunisia together with EU member states, the Tunisian government, local and European industries.

Dii opens a Tunis office

In order to effectively implement the Desertec Vision, Dii will open an office in Tunisia, to be headed by Mr René Buchler.

Mr Buchler, former industry manager, is the Dii representative in North Africa. Having lived and worked in this region for many years, Mr Buchler has gathered invaluable experience implementing and developing energy projects and the necessary local infrastructure.

“Recent activities in Japan and North Africa have shown that strong ties between Europe and North Africa are more necessary than ever in order to achieve security and stability. A close joint venture with the Tunisian government will play a decisive role towards the implementation of the Desertec Vision.

We are going to actively involve the main European political and industry players in order to expedite the joint development of an economical and long lasting energy generation in the desert regions”, Paul van Son, CEO, Dii.
