Paul van Son, CEO Dii GmbH on efficiency, decentralised and centralised power generation:
"The possibilities of generating sustainable power in Europe are not unlimited. With MENA countries likely to experience rapid population growth and soaring energy consumption in the coming years, optimal use of the few options available is key.
Dii sees the priorities as follows:
Firstly, avoid wasting energy (energy efficiency); secondly, encourage decentralised power generation where reasonable and feasible; finally, promote the centralised generation of renewable energy in places with a wealth of natural resources such as solar, wind and hydro power, thus offering the most suitable conditions.
We are only at the beginning of a revolutionary development as the ties between Europe and MENA are becoming closer. In the long term, electricity from the desert will sustainably satisfy local demand in the Middle East and North Africa. In addition, MENA countries will be able to provide a sustainable supply of up to 15% of Europe’s electricity needs. Energy efficiency, decentralised power generation and sustainable centralised energy sources combined are the options to rely on."
